The United Auto Workers Union was organized in 1935, providing union members within the auto trade with a rise in wages and different advantages. The union went on strike several times in later years, extracting extra benefits from the companies for which they worked. Some economists claimed that union benefits together with pensions, turned financially burdensome for the businesses which provided them, creating almost insurmountable monetary problems and resulting in bankruptcies. The U.S. economy, struggling in general, was especially onerous hit by the decline in the automobile trade. Jobs were misplaced in the trade itself, and in lots of the ancillary businesses associated with automotive manufacturing. Ford’s assembly line improvements and management techniques cut manufacturing time for the Model T from 12 hours and eight minutes in 1913, to one car every 24 seconds in 1927 when the last of the model Ts had been manufactured. In less than 20 years, from 1909 to 1927, Ford built more than 15 million automobiles.
